Dr. George Robert Van Sciver

Dr. George Robert Van Sciver of Moorestown died peacefully Saturday October, 8 at Samaritan Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mt. Holly with his devoted wife of 53 years and his children by his side. He was 80 years old. Born in Beverly, NJ in 1931, he was the second to last of five children of J. Gilbert and Florence Van Sciver. He was proud of his family: his brothers, the late Hon. J. Gilbert Van Sciver and the late Dr. Richard Van Sciver, and his sisters Marjorie Moore, and M. Eloise Van Sciver of Moorestown. He attended Temple University where he received his DDS before entering the U.S. Air Force. While on active duty in Germany, he met and married he said, "The crown jewel of my life," Margarete I. Freericks, in 1958. Upon completing his tour of duty in Long Island, Dr. Van Sciver returned to Mt. Holly, NJ to open his dental practice, and he returned to Temple for his degree in Orthodontics. Dr. Van Sciver practiced orthodontics for over thirty years at his office on Madison Avenue in Mt. Holly and from his home office at Fairview Avenue in Moorestown. When he retired he pursued some of his favorite passions, namely: sailing, hunting, gardening, and fly-fishing taking numerous voyages with Peggy on the Chesapeake Bay, and making many trips into the woods of Pennsylvania, New York, and Maine. He returned to his profession as an educator and taught at Temple's Kornberg School of Dentistry until 2010. With the help of his wife, family and the determined Dr. Michael J. Nissenblatt of Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, Dr. Van Sciver battled cancer of the esophagus and its multiple metastases. He is predeceased by his son, Robert Gerd, and his daughter, Amy. He will be missed by his wife, Peggy, daughter Karin, son-in-law Chris, son Christopher, daughter-in-law, Julie nee McDermott, and granddaughters Jessica, Heather, and Clare. He was beloved by his sisters-in law and their families in Germany and Italy and by a large multitude, also, of nieces, nephews, and their children here in the states. Relatives and friends of the family are kindly invited to attend his visitation Tuesday 7 - 9:00 PM & Wednesday 8:30 - 9:30 AM at the Funeral Home of Inglesby & Sons Funeral Home, 2426 Cove Road, Pennsauken, New Jersey. Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday 10 AM St. Peter Church, Merchantville NJ. Interment Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Moorestown NJ.
