William Ferris

William “Reds” Bernard Ferris, Wonderful father, husband, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family in his final hours. He was 94 and suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. Born to J. Herbert and Marie (Corrigan) Ferris in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Bill never met a person who was not a friend. He loved to tell a good story and make people laugh, especially at himself. If Bill was around, it was automatically a good time. Athletic by nature-he played football, baseball, and basketball in high school -he was good at most things he tried. He trained as a naval pilot in WWII and was a graduate of Peirce College. His love of people and gift of gab enabled him to become a very successful account executive in the printing and publishing field. Next to his wife, Edith, golf was his weekend love. He played, won tournaments, and enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow golfers until he was 90, when he won his last tournament and finally put the clubs away! He was an adventurer who taught himself how to do things that he enjoyed-wood working, motor boating, sailing, real estate, and the stock market. If there was something he wanted to learn or do, he just picked up a manual or took a class and learned it. He adored his wife Edith-and thanked his lucky stars every day for her and for their children, Michele, Maureen and Michael. He loved to shower her with surprises from her first car in 1959-a green Chevrolet on St. Patrick’s Day-to hanging flower baskets every Mother’s Day-to fabulous birthday celebrations where her children and grandchildren would pop up out of nowhere to delight her. There was nothing Bill liked more than planning these surprises for Edith. Both Edith and Bill shared a love of travel and spent many happy years roaming America, Canada, and Europe in their later years. They especially loved all of the different people they met along the way. Bill also spent his retirement years in Avalon, NJ where he loved golfing, fishing, walking the beaches, engaging in civic activities and hosting friends and family. Bill leaves behind Edith, his wife of 68 years, children Michele (Joe Gorvoy) Ferris Hansen Gorvoy, Esq.; Maureen (Dave) Pepson; Dr.Michael (Gail) Ferris, MD and grandchildren Erik Hansen, Michael Pepson, Esq. and Jennifer (Jon) Pepson Elwood. The family would like to thank especially the tireless and loving staff at Edenton Senior Living’s Blossom Place, who made his final months safe, comfortable and happy. Relatives and friends are invited to gather on Friday October 7, 2016 from 11am - 12pm at Inglesby & Sons Funeral Home, 2624 Cove Road, Pennsauken, NJ 08109 and a Funeral Service will be held at 12PM, followed by interment at Calvary Cemetery, Cherry Hill, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations to an Alzheimer’s charity would be appreciated.
