Dan Sullivan, Disability Advocate, Wheelchair Sports Hall of Famer Dan Sullivan, 71, of Pennsauken, lived an incredible 71years beyond all expectations and died peacefully at his home on January 4, 2015. A native of Long Beach, Long Island, Dan earned his master’s degree from Hofstra University in rehabilitation counseling and pioneered new programs and ideas in disability advocacy, vocational rehabilitation and wheelchair sports. Although Dan competed on the gold medal winning 1965 Paralympic team in London England and on the 1967 Pan-American USA wheelchair sports team, he made his greatest mark as the founder and administrator of wheelchair sports programs. Over his long career, Dan created the first wheelchair sports team for high school students on the east coast at the Human Resources Center, on Long Island. When he moved to Philadelphia he founded and led the Delaware Valley Wheelchair Athletic Association, thus creating the nationally renowned Philadelphia Spokesman wheelchair team. For his leadership at local, regional and national levels, Dan was inducted into the USA Wheelchair Sports Hall of Fame and National Wheelchair Basketball Association Hall of Fame, “For his leadership at local, regional and national levels.” A native of Long Beach, Long Island, Dan moved to Philadelphia in 1978 to become the Founder and Executive Director of hireAbility, an employment program for individuals with disabilities, which he led for over 25 years. His program has been credited for placing over a thousand people with disabilities in competitive jobs during his tenure. In addition to his wife of 23 years, Nancy (DeKorte) Sullivan, he will be missed by the many friends, rehabilitation professionals and wheelchair athletes whose lives he so greatly influenced. Visitation will be held at Mary, Queen of All Saints, 4824 Camden Avenue, Pennsauken, NJ on Tuesday, from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 7:00 PM Tuesday evening. Burial will be a private service at Valley Forge Memorial Gardens on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
