Marie Murphy

Marie Catherine Murphy, 84, of Audubon, passed away on January 27, 2022 at AtlantiCare Hospital, Pomona, NJ. She was born in Camden, NJ in 1937 to the late Ignatius and Mary (Wolf) Penk. Marie was everything the matriarch of a family should be. She was the embodiment of strength and love. As a single, working mother, Marie parented three generations of children. For over 25 years, she served the public as a social worker with the Camden County Board of Social Services. Marie loved to spend time in the kitchen, baking and cooking Hungarian recipes that her parents had passed down. Holidays were her time to shine. For days leading up to Thanksgiving and Christmas, she would spend countless hours prepping, cooking, wrapping, and shopping for her family. She had a natural musical talent. She could play the drums, keyboard, kazoo, harmonica and enjoyed yodeling. Marie loved to sing and taught her children and grandchildren the words to every Christmas carol. Marie advocated for animals, regularly donating to many animal charities, including the ASPCA, The Wildlife Foundation, and Save the Elephants. In addition to these organizations, she also contributed to the Boys Town charity. Her love of animals led her to work at the Maple Shade Animal Hospital for many years. Of all the animals to love, Marie was particularly fond of German shepherds. An avid beachgoer, Marie loved the ocean. She spent her summers teaching the children of the family how to body surf and catch waves, followed by summer evenings on the Wildwood boardwalk. Marie regularly supported her church and ensured that her children had a Catholic education and upbringing. Best known for her iconic laugh, Marie will be deeply missed by all those who love her. She is survived by her son W. Mike (Mary) and daughter Donna, grandchildren Christie, Jamie (Willy), Ryan (Stephanie), Thomas, Sarah, Julie (Dom), and James, great-grandchildren Justin, Kaylee, Anthony, Savannah, Colin, Sebastian, Henry, Wesley, and Zoe as well cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. She is now reunited with her parents, Mary and Ignatius, her daughter Lynn, brother John and many other family members and friends including Sandy Walker her best friend and the 44th St. crew. A visitation will be Thursday, February 3, 2022 from 10:00am - 11:00am at St. Mary Church, 426 Monmouth St, Gloucester City, NJ 08030. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00am.
